LMi.net DNS Hosting

Domain Name Hosting

What is "DNS Hosting"?

When a request is made for a service involving your domain name, say if someone wants to e-mail to "you@yourdomain.com", or to go to "www.yourdomain.com", the requesting computer first has to do a DNS (Domain Name Service) lookup to find out where the mail server is, or where the Web page is. That's where we come in. We set up what's called a "DNS zone file" for your domain, containing all the information needed to point the requesting computer to the right place.

If you have servers on the Internet, you can make up names for them using your domain name, and we'll set it up for you. For example, you could have a server "polarbear.mydomain.com" at IP address 208.25.68.30. The DNS zone file is where we set this up this information ("polarbear.mydomain.com" points to 208.25.68.30).

You can also make up e-mail addresses when you have your own domain name. You can make it look like you are a big company, even if you are not, by having us set up your mail routing:

"sales@mydomain.com" gets routed to "mymailbox"
"info@mydomain.com" gets routed to "mymailbox"
"webmaster@mydomain.com" gets routed to "mymailbox"
"ceo@mydomain.com" gets routed to "mymailbox"

No one has to know that you are answering all the mail! And having your own domain name really comes in handy for avoiding spam. If you get a lot of spam at one address, you can make up a new address for yourself, but you will not have to switch mailboxes.

If we host your domain name, all edits to your zone file are free, which makes things really flexible and low cost for you.

Secondary Hosting

If you are an Internet techie, and already run your own DNS server, you might need secondary DNS service, so that your domain stays functional, even if your DNS server is experiencing an outage. We'll slave your zone files, assuring that you get DNS reliability, and you control your own master zone file and can make edits without consulting us.
