LMi.net Support - Setup Exchange with Outlook 2003 for Windows XP
Overview
If you have Windows XP, you can now configure Outlook 2003
to connect to the LMi.net Exchange system over the internet
when behind a firewall or cable modem without the need to
use virtual private network (VPN) connections. This feature – connecting
to an Exchange account by using Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
over HTTP – allows
Outlook 2003 to connect to the LMi.net Exchange system securely
while getting around blocked ports (i.e. port 135, etc.)
that many ISPs and Firewalls block.
Note: This connection method is via HTTPS and is encrypted
by 128-bit SSL.
Requirements • Outlook 2003 (Included with Microsoft Office 2003 or available
from LMi)
• Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or higher installed Please
visit the Microsoft Update site
and install all recommended Service Packs and Security Updates. NOTE:
RPC over HTTP in Outlook 2003 will not work with Windows
2000/Me/98, you can still use IMAP or POP for email but
other important Exchange features (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks
and Public Folders) would not function. If you do not have Windows XP,
we recommend that you use Outlook Web Access (at ex.lmi.net)
for the best functionality.)
NOTE: If you are running Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) You may skip this step.
You can learn more about this hotfix from Microsoft's knowledgebase
by clicking here.
2. Make sure your system meets all of the requirements in
the System Requirements above. Make sure you have installed
the HotFix in step #1.
3. Create a new Outlook 2003 Profile:
a. Go to Start and Control Panel
b. Launch the “Mail” applet.
c. Click Show Profiles
d. Add a new Profile
e. In the Profile Name – enter “LMi Exchange ”
4. Hit next when prompted to add a new email account:
5. Choose Microsoft Exchange Server and hit Next:
6. Enter the server address of
ms10.mse5.exchange.ms
along with the “short” version of your username:
(this is sometimes the first part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol – but
may not always be.) Do NOT hit Check Name at this time.
7. Hit the “More Settings” button. If
you are behind a firewall or using a cable modem your window
may hang for 60 seconds or more. Please be patient
(even if it says "not responding")
as the Outlook profile is trying to find a way to connect
to the LMi Exchange system. After about 60 seconds it will
time-out and return an error that says the
“action could not be completed”. This is OK.
If it doesn’t hang just skip to step nine (9).
If you get this error this is fine. Hit OK.. then you
will see the following window:
Hit “Cancel” and then the “Microsoft Exchange Server” settings should appear.
If they do not automatically appear, hit the “More Settings
Button.”
8. You now should see the “Microsoft Exchange Server” settings
as follows:
9. Go to the Security tab and change the “Logon Network
Security” drop
down to read Kerberos NTLM Password Authentication as follows:
10. Next, Go to the Connection tab and place a check next
to
“Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP” at the bottom of the
window. If you do not see this checkbox, please make sure
you have met all of the criteria in the System Requirements. If you
still do not see this prompt, and you have met all of the system
requirements and have installed the HotFix for Microsoft Windows XP in
Step #1. If this still doesn't work then contact LMi
Support for further assistance.
11. Click “Exchange Proxy Settings…” and
enter the following:
a. For "Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange":
mail.mse5.exchange.ms
b. Make sure that “On fast Networks…” and “On slow Networks” are both checked.
c. For Proxy Authentication settings make
sure NTLM Authentication is selected. Your
window should look exactly like the one below:
12. Next hit Ok on the Exchange Proxy Settings window,
and Ok again to complete the “Microsoft Exchange Server” window.
You should now be back at the Email Accounts window as below:
Make Sure “Use Cached Exchange Mode” is checked.
13. Hit the “Check Name” button and if all
goes well you should get a “connect to mail.mse5.exchange.ms” login
box:
** SIGN IN AS FOLLOWS **
User name: mse5\username
Password: <your LMi Exchange password here>
where username is the “short” version of your username.
Normally this is the first part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol
but it may be different. If you are unsure of your username, contact LMI Support.
14. Your username should now resolve
to your mailbox name and be “underlined” Hit Next and you should
see the following congratulations window:
15. **IMPORTANT** set the new profile
to either “Prompt” for a profile or to always use the “LMi
Exchange” profile. If you have other email
accounts that you check using Outlook, choose the "Prompt"
option. If you use Outlook only to check your LMi Exchange
account, use the "always" option as in the example below. When
finished,
hit OK.
16. That's it! You should now be able to open Outlook 2003
and use your LMi Exchange account.
You will be prompted for your LMi Exchange password each
time you start Outook 2003. This is by design and enhances the
security of your LMi Exchange Mailbox.
NOTE: It may take a few moments for Outlook to load the
first time as it is setting up a local copy of the Inbox. Also it may take
longer if you are behind a firewall or are using a Cable Modem.
