How To Use Pine To Check Your E-mail

PLEASE NOTE: This does not work for users with mailboxes only - this is for dialup users with shell accounts.

You can log in to our shell server and send, receive, and view your mail using the mail editor program Pine. Pine ( short for "Program for Internet News & Email") is a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages.

You will need a Telnet program (NCSA Telnet, Trumpet Telnet, CRT Telnet, etc.) to do this.

GETTING TO PINE
  • Launch the Telnet program
  • Go to the File menu, choose Open Connection... (On PC Telnet programs most likely it will be File --> Connect...)
  • For Host Name type "shell.lmi.net", hit Return (Other settings that may be required on a PC Telnet program would be: Protocol: telnet, Port: 23, Emulation: VT100).
  • At the login prompt type your login name, then hit Return.
  • At the password prompt type your password, then hit Return.
  • At the Unix prompt type: pine
  • If this is the first time you are using Pine you will be asked: "SPECIAL OFFER: Would you like to receive (via email) a brief document entitled "Secrets of Pine" ? Request document?" Type y for Yes or n for No.
CONFIGURING PINE
You don't really need to do much configuring of Pine (there are a lot of configuration options but you probably don't need to explore these unless you decide to make Pine your default mail client). You might want to check out these first few options:
  • From the Main Menu, use the arrow keys to highlight the "S SETUP - Configure or update Pine" option, and then hit Enter (or just type "s").
  • Choose "C" for "Config".
  • Use the arrow keys to highlight the option that you want and Hit enter when it's highlighted. Make your change and hit Enter again
  • A few configuration option you may want to change are:
    personal-name = Your Name
user-domain = lmi.net [or your own custom domain]
    smtp-server = smtp.lmi.net
  • choose"E" for "Exit Config" when you're done.
VIEWING YOUR MAIL
  • From the Main menu use the arrow keys to highlight the "L FOLDER LIST - Select a folder to view" option (or just type"l")
  • Hit Return to list folders
  • Then you'll get a screen where the [ Select Here to See Expanded List ] option will be highlighted
  • Hit Return to go to the list of folders
  • Then you'll get a screen where the Inbox option will be highlighted: INBOX
  • Hit Return to go to your Inbox
  • There will be all your mail messages
  • Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight a message, hit Return to view it
  • Look at the commands at the bottom of the screen to help you navigate
  • After viewing a message, type "i" to return to the message Index
  • When in the message Index, you can type "d" when a message is highlighted to delete it.
SENDING MESSAGES
  • From the Main Menu use the arrow keys to highlight the "COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send/post a message" option and then hit Enter (or just type"c"). It will create a new message.
  • Type in the recipient's e-mail address. Hit the Tab key to get to the next line.
  • If you want to send a copy of the message to another person, type their e-mail address on the CC line. Hit Tab to get to the next line.
  • Hit Tab again to get to the Subject of the e-mail message. Type in the subject of the message.
  • Hit Tab again to get to the body of the e-mail message. Type your message. When you are done typing your message hit CTRL-X (hold down control key and then type the X key) to send the message. When it asks "Send message?" type y for yes. The message will then be sent.
  • To exit out of the Pine program hit "m" for Main Menu, then "q" for quit
  • Hit "y" when it asks if you really want to quit
  • At the Unix prompt, type: logout
  • Now you can quit out of the Telnet program (File--> Quit for Mac users, File --> Exit for PC users).
